Kenneth J. Kenneth J. Doka (Ph.D., FT) is a professor emeritus of counseling at the graduate school of The College of New Rochelle, an ordained Lutheran minister, a licensed mental health counselor and senior vice-president to The Hospice Foundation of America, for whom he hosts annual teleconferences and edits the monthly newsletter (Journeys: A Newsletter to Help in Bereavement). Dr. Doka introduced the groundbreaking concepts of disenfranchised grief and adaptive grieving styles. His publications include over 100 chapters and articles in professional journals, as well as 40 books, the most recent of which are DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF: NEW DIRECTIONS, CHALLENGES, AND STRATEGIES FOR PRACTICE (2002); COUNSELING INDIVIDUALS WITH LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS (2009); GRIEVING BEYOND GENDER: UNDERSTANDING THE WAYS MEN AND WOMEN MOURN (2010); and GRIEF IS A JOURNEY (2016). A long-time member of both ADEC (president, 1993-1994) and IWG (chairperson, 1997-1999), Dr. Doka is editor of Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, one of the two major professional journals in this field. Among many awards, he received a Special Contributions to the Field Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from ADEC; the Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, Concordia College; and the Herman Feifel Award for Lifetime Achievement from the IWG.
