Keith Hammond was born in England and educated in British boarding schools. He did his medical training at Guy's Hospital in London before emigrating to Africa where he was a government doctor in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (Now Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi). On returning to England he married Gina and together they sailed a thirty-five-foot yacht out to the Caribbean.
