Countess Karolina Lanckoronska

Born in Buchberg, Austria in 1898, Countess Karolina Lanckoronska was an aristocrat and art historian who taught at the University of Lwow, then part of Poland. When the Soviets came to occupy Lwow, Lanckoronska became active in the Polish resistance and was arrested in Kolomyja in 1942, imprisoned by the Germans and later sentenced to death; incarcerated first in Stanislawow, then in Lwow and Berlin, before being placed in the Ravensbruk concentration camp. Born in Buchberg, Austria in 1898, Countess Karolina Lanckoronska was an aristocrat and art historian who taught at the University of Lwow, then part of Poland. When the Soviets came to occupy Lwow, Lanckoronska became active in the Polish resistance and was arrested in Kolomyja in 1942, imprisoned by the Germans and later sentenced to death; incarcerated first in Stanislawow, then in Lwow and Berlin, before being placed in the Ravensbruk concentration camp. After her release in 1945, she lived in England, Switzerland and Rome, where she established, with others, the Polish Historical Institute. In 1967, she founded, with her sister, the Lanckoronska Foundation registered in Switzerland and London. She died in Rome in 2002, aged 104. See less
