Joseph Louis Bernardin
Bernardin was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on April 1, 1928. He was ordained a priest in 1952 for the Diocese of Charleston. In 1966, Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan of Atlanta ordained Bernardin a bishop, and he served that diocese as auxiliary bishop for two years. In 1968, he was elected general secretary of the U.S. episcopal conference, later serving as its president (1974-1977). Pope Paul VI appointed him archbishop of Chicago and named him a cardinal six months later.
