Joanna Knight was born and raised in London, where she was a pupil at North London Collegiate School. She obtained a degree in modern languages from Bristol University, taking the opportunity to live, study and work across France and Latin America in various guises: as an English language teacher, ski guide, au pair, chef and a soup kitchen volunteer. Joanna Knight was born and raised in London, where she was a pupil at North London Collegiate School.
