She has various academic writing credits in sociological theory. One example is the article she co-authored with Roland Robertson that introduced the topic of a theory of globalization to sociological literature. Being a theorist, she always focuses her courses at the level of "grand theory" and in doing so she developed very simple and elegant explanations of sociological concepts. JoAnn has also developed many research exercises for all of the courses she teaches. Currently, she is working on a manuscript called, "Globalization and the End of Modernity" and she is working on a manual called, "Internationalizing the Sociology Curriculum," with a colleague.
