Jerry Martien lives in the Humboldt Bay region of northern California. Poet and writer, teacher, carpenter, and watershed citizen, for half a century he's worked on behalf of thriving forests, abundant rivers, and healthy communities. Martien grew up in rural 1950's southern California, attended UC Riverside not long after it was built, went east to study at Rutgers and for several years taught English at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1970 he left academic life and with his wife and two young sons returned to California. There they became part of Humboldt County's cultural and political changes, embracing new models of living and schooling, and the active defense of forests, rivers, and native culture. See less
