Jeffrey Shanks is an archaeologist, historian, and scholar of early 20th century popular culture and speculative fiction. Jeffrey Shanks is an archaeologist, historian, and scholar of early 20th century popular culture and speculative fiction. In particular, he specializes in the history and literature of the pulp magazines and early comic books. He has published a number of popular and scholarly articles on pulp writers like Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Comic Book Collectors Association and is the co-chair of Pulp Studies for the Popular Culture Association. Most recently he has written or co-written chapters for several academic volumes including Critical Insights: Pulp Fiction of the 20s and 30s and Undead in the West II: They Just Keep Coming . His chapter "Hyborian Age Archaeology" in the book Conan Meets the Academy: Multidisciplinary Essays on the Enduring Barbarian won the 2013 Robert E. Howard Foundation Award for Best Article.
