Dr. Azar has built one of the strongest academic and research program in drilling engineering at the University. He generated more than fifteen million U.S Dollars in research funds from the private sector of the oil/gas industry during his directorship. He supervised more than eighty master degree students and 12 Ph.D students. In 1996 he resigned from the TUDRP directorship to devote more of his time to teaching. Professor Azar is a well known lecturer in drilling engineering world-wide. He is closely associated with all major oil/gas companies in every part of the globe. He is the author and /or coauthor of four textbooks and more than sixty refereed publications in technical journals. He has given more than one hundred presentations at various technical meetings and conferences. He has been invited as keynote speaker at several international technical conferences. Also, he was an invited speaker at the Advances in Drilling Technologies workshop organized by the U.S National Research Council and the Academy of Sciences. Professor Azar has served as a member and/or chairman on several SPE committees and as technical reviewer of several engineering journals. He is currently the Chairman for the Special Interest Group (TIG) on multilateral drilling. Dr. Azar has received the 1997 SPE Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty and the 1998 SPE Drilling Engineering Award. He is registered professional practicing engineer and member of SPE and API. His areas of research include: wellbore fluids hydraulics, wellbore mechanics, drill bit mechanics, drillstring mechanics and well control mechanics all in application to vertical, directional, horizontal, multilateral, coiled tubing, under-balanced and slim hole drilling.
