Isaac L Peretz
I.L. Peretz, known as "The Father of Yiddish Literature," was born in Zamoscz, Poland in 1859, settled in Warsaw in 1890 and quickly became the leader of the movement to develop Yiddish as a modern, secular literary language. His sophisticated, incisive stories tell of rabbinic genius, marriages sweet and bitter, poverty of body and richness of spirit, and provide a matchless view of Jewish life in Eastern Europe at the turn of the last century.
