HANS SCHWERDTFEGER studied Mathematics in Germany in the Universities of Leipzig, Göttingen, and Bonn where he obtained his Dr. phil. Degree (Ph. D.) in 1934. He has held the position of lecturer in Mathematics in the University of Adelaide, Australia (1940-47) and Senior Lecturer in the University of Melbourne (1948-1957).
