H. Kent Baker is a University Professor of Finance at the Kogod School of Business at American University. He served as the Chair of the Department of Finance and Real Estate for eleven years and headed the Finance Center of Excellence for eight years. Before joining the faculty at American University in 1975, he held both faculty and administrative positions at Georgetown University and University of Maryland. He has served on several boards of directors and advisory councils including the Eastern Finance Association and Southern Finance Association. Dr. Baker s books include Understanding Financial Management: A Practical Guide (Blackwell, 2005), Business Fundamentals (2005), Financial Management (1987), Financial Markets: Instruments and Concepts (1986), Building a Professional Image (1987), Stepping Up to Supervision (1982), among others. He has more than 220 publications and 350 book reviews and article abstracts. Dr. Baker s research has appeared in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management, Financial Analysts Journal, Journal of Portfolio Management, Journal of Financial Research, Financial Review, Harvard Business Review, and many other outlets. He ranks among the most prolific authors in finance during the past half century. One of his research interests is dividends and dividends policy, a topic on which he has published more than 35 articles in such areas as cash dividends, specially designated dividends, stock dividends, stock splits, and dividend reinvestment plans.
