Er war ein deutsch-niederl�ndischer Offizier und Verwaltungsbeamter, Botaniker, Naturforscher und Forschungsreisender. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenk�rzel lautet "Rumph.". Er diente von 1645 bis 1648 als Soldat der niederl�ndischen Armee in Portugal. Anschlie�end trat er als Offizier in den Dienst der "Niederl�ndischen Ostindien-Kompanie" und kam 1653 auf die Molukken-Insel Ambon. W�hrend dieser Zeit bei der Kolonialadministration widmete er sich naturkundlichen Expeditionen und erhielt schlie�lich von der deutschen Akademie Leopoldina den Beinamen "Plinius Indicus". In seinem Werk "Amboinische Rarit�tenkammer" beschrieb er tropische Schalentiere, Muscheln und Mineralien. 1669/1670 erblindete er am Grauen Star, was ihm seinen Beinamen "Blinder Seher von Ambon" einbrachte; 1674 verlor er bei einem Tsunami seine Ehefrau und zwei kleine T�chter; 1687 brannte seine Bibliothek ab. Er lie� sich niemals entmutigen und arbeitete unbeirrt weiter.
