Gene Kemp was born in Wigginton, Staffordshire in 1926. Before becoming a hugely succesful childrens writer, Gene was a teacher. It was from this profession that many of her ideas came from. Certainly, her best-known story the turbulent term of Tyke Tyler and its setting of Crinklepit combined school were inspired by Genes previous occupation. The turbulent term of Tyke Tyler won the Children's rights workshop other award in 1977 and the Carnegie medal in 1978. The clock tower Ghost, Juniper and Just Ferret were all shortlisted for the Smarties prize. Gene now lives in Exeter. See less
