Gary's photographic training was at the Photography Images College in South Melbourne, under John Cato, in the early 1970s. He has worked as an economist, a tramways conductor, an academic, and a political and policy advisor. He retired from full-time paid work to become a photographer in 2011. Gary's abstractions from nature pick up from, and refer back to, those made by John Cato in his two photographic series: Tree, a journey (1971 73) and Petroglyph (1971 73). Gary saw some of these works when he was a student in Melbourne. See less
