He is also an affiliated senior researcher at the Institute for International Law of Leuven University. He was previously a legal advisor at the Belgian Ministry of Defence/Defence Staff (2004-2007) and a research and teaching assistant at Leuven University (1998-2004). He studied law at Leuven University and at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of "International Law Aspects of the EU's Security and Defence Policy", with a Particular Focus on the Law of Armed Conflict and Human Rights and is a member of the editorial board of the "Military Law & Law of War Review". He has inter alia published on peace operations, international humanitarian and human rights law and EU external relations law.
