Frederik Naert is a member of the Legal Service of the Council of the European Union, where he deals with EU external relations, including EU military operations. Frederik Naert is a member of the Legal Service of the Council of the European Union, where he deals with EU external relations, including EU military operations. He is also an affiliated senior researcher at the Institute for International Law of Leuven University. He was previously a legal advisor at the Belgian Ministry of Defence/Defence Staff (2004-2007) and a research and teaching assistant at Leuven University (1998-2004). He studied law at Leuven University and at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of "International Law Aspects of the EU's Security and Defence Policy", with a Particular Focus on the Law of Armed Conflict and Human Rights and is a member of the editorial board of the "Military Law & Law of War Review". He has inter alia published on peace operations, international humanitarian and human rights law and EU external relations law.
