As a student in early nineteenth century Germany, he was influenced by his father's writings, which helped to maintain a spiritual glow in his own heart in the midst of a rationalistic atmosphere. He soon gained national fame as a preacher, becoming minister of the famous Trinity Church in Berlin. Krummacher was a powerful force in a mighty upsurging of evangelical fervor that was for a brief time the age of Germany's glory as far as the Christian church was concerned. Aware of the increasingly tragic drift of the German church toward infidelity and rationalism, Krummacher spoke out in opposition. He was appointed court chaplain in recognition of his great influence throughout all Germany as preacher, writer, and defender of the faith.
