Emma Gerstein

Emma Gerstein (1903-2002) met Osip and Nadezhda Mandelstam in 1928. First acclaimed in 1965 for The Destiny of Lermontov, her trailblazing study of the golden age of Russian literature, she was again recipient of major literary awards thirty years later for her collected memoirs, which were first published in Russian when she was ninety-five years old. She spent almost all of her long life in Moscow.
