Edward Long

Edward Long was born in 1734 in Cornwall, England. His family had been long associated with Jamaica - his great-grandfather, Samuel Long, had arrived on the island in 1655 as a lieutenant in the English army of conquest - and the Long family established itself as part of the island's governing planter elite. Edward Long went to Jamaica in 1757 after his father's death and returned to England because of ill-health in 1769.
