She consistently emphasizes reconciliation between people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures. In 1987, she founded an inner-city mission, Reconciliation Outreach, which is still impacting and reaching out to the homeless and needy. As an ordained minister, Dorothy holds a BS degree in Christian Counseling and has received awards from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchenson (1991) and Serita Jakes and the Potter's House (2005).
