Lawrence , in full David Herbert Lawrence , (born September 11, 1885, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England--died March 2, 1930, Vence, France), English author of novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, and letters. His novels Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), and Women in Love (1920) made him one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century.
