In 1960, Lightner received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley and in 1963 he earned his doctorial in organic chemistry from Stanford University. The University of Nevada named David Lightner their 1978 Outstanding Researcher. Lightner's research into phototherapy and serum bilirubin levels earned him the Outstanding Researcher award in 1978. The National Science Foundation also gave Lightner a grant for this same study. Before going to Nevada in 1974, Lightner was as assistant professor of organic chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles and was an associate professor of organic chemistry at Texas Tech University. While at Nevada, Lightner was given the inaugural Regents Researcher of the Year award in 1992 for his work using phototherapy for neonatal jaundice and his search to help understand the biology and structural properties of molecules. Lightner served as chairman and Fuson Professor of Chemistry at one time at the university and is a noted international scholar in the field of phototherapy for jaundice in the newborn. The National Institute of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society have supported Lightner's research. Currently, Lightner is a chemistry professor at Nevada. See less
