Hall attended Highbury and Michaelhouse Schools, before realizing his boyhood dream of joining the British Army in 1946. After passing out a junior under-officer in the Waterloo Company at Sandhurst, he completed a parachute course with flying colours, before joining the 33 Para Field Regiment. As a keen photographer, during one of this brigade's many visits to the Middle East, he was instructed by his commanding officer to entertain none other than King Hussein with a photographic presentation. During his 22-year service with the British Army, he travelled extensively and saw active service in the Suez Canal and Borneo campaigns. Having served with the Royal Artillery in the Royal Marine Commando, and also the Parachute Brigade, he was one of the few officers entitled to wear both the green and red beret. He later became an assistant military attache in Vietnam and then 2 I/C of the Commando Regiment, serving in Singapore. He retired from the army in 1968 and returned to South Africa, where he joined his gunner brother, Hugh, in the family fruit-processing business. His overriding passion was military history and he soon became one of the world's leading authorities on the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal. He served as Chairman of the Gunners' Association and the South African Military History Society. On his retirement was appointed Chairman of sub-section British War Graves of the National Monuments Council. As an accomplished genealogist he was also an active member of the Genealogical Society.
