D. L. Birchfield is a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Law. He has taught Indian studies at Cornell University and the University of New Mexico. He currently teaches Indian law at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta.
