Cynthia Tyler attended Georgia State University and Atlanta College of Art, and began post graduate studies through Gratz College in Philadelphia. For more than thirty years she was a professional calligrapher, taking commissions from the United States and Europe. She has lectured at The Medieval Institute, exhibited in the International Book Fair in Leipzig, and was published in the scholarly journal Visible Language.
