Carol Harkavy was born in New York City a year before the end of World War II. She grew up on Sixteenth Street in Greenwich Village. In 1955, her family moved to Spring Valley, New York, a rural town thirty-five miles north of New York City. She attended The City College of New York, where she later became a tenured instructor in the Speech Department.
