Bryher (1894-1983) was the companion of poet H.D. and was critically acclaimed for her historical novels and memoirs. She supported cultural icons as diverse as Marianne Moore, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin through her philanthropy, and as a publisher and film producer in the 1920s and 1930s. In the late 1930s, she helped save over 100 people from the Nazis.
