Wagenhauser, after eight years of teaching in Dallas, headed to Peru in 1986 and ended up at the helm of the South American Explorers Club. For the next seven years she worked extensively with independent travellers in Peru and Ecuador. For several years, she led trips for Wilderness Trave.
