Bergen Evans, a Rhodes Scholar, a Harvard graduate and a Northwestern university professor of English, was also one of America's most renowned experts on the English language. As the host and moderator of the TV show, "The Last Word, " he was known for his wit as well as his erudition. He was the co-author of a best-selling dictionary -- "A Dictionary of Contemporary American Usage" -- and the author of "The Natural History of Nonsense, The Spoor of Spooks" and "Comfortable Words."
