When her mother was six, her father a coal miner, was killed in the mines in West Va., a tragedy that had a life-long impact on her mother. Author was born in Washington, D.C., attended school there when integration was introduced. When graduation was not possible due to attending five schools in three years, she withdrew from high school after 11th grade. Working as a secretary in a stockbrokerage firm, she was able to obtain diploma by attending night school. The goal of college degree took ten years due to divorce and move across country. See less
