Before becoming a novelist, Barbara Murphy was a secretary with an advertising agency and then, a job she remembers with great affection, secretary to the editor of Home Notes and Modern Woman magazines, part of the Woman's Own Group, just like Jane Harrison. (They do say 'write about what you know'). After marriage and children beckoned, the family moved to Hampshire and Barbara became a temporary secretary, which gave her the time to attend workshops on creative writing. Her hobby has always been connected to music and theatre and Barbara was accompanist with an amateur theatre group for many years. Retirement fortunately allows even more time for writing but she maintains her links by watching family and friends behind the footlights. Although 'Janey's War' was her first published novel, it was not the first one Barbara had written. Her first, 'A Phantom of Delight' is a totally different type of novel, a fantasy - also published on Kindle. See less
