Antony Wynn read Persian and Turkish at Balliol and spent a year at Shiraz University in Iran. In the 1970s he worked in Hamadan (western Iran) as resident carpet buyer for the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers of London, travelling widely over much of the country covered by Sykes, and then in north-east Iran where he managed a country racecourse.
