She holds law degrees from Germany and the United States and received her Doctorate of Juridical Science with Thomas Buergenthal as her advisor. As a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute she has published widely in international law. Her scholarly research is focused primarily on international criminal law, international human rights and comparative constitutional law. She also co-edited the Max Planck Commentaries on World Trade Law.
