Andrey Andreyevich Gromyko
Gromyko was a Soviet statesman and president (1985-1988), born near Minsk, Russia. He studied agriculture and economics, and became a research scientist at the Soviet Academy of Sciences. In 1939 he joined the staff of the Russian embassy in Washington, becoming ambassador in 1943. As longest serving foreign minister (1957-1985), he was responsible for conducting Soviet realtions with the West during the Cold War.
