Denn dort spielten sich die wichtigsten Ereignisse ab, uber die die bekannten Geschichtsschreiber berichteten, dort wurde das gultige weltliche und kirchliche Recht festgeschrieben, vornehmlich dort wurden neue Stilrichtungen in Literatur, Baukunst und Malerei entwickelt. Dagegen schenkte man der byzantinischen Provinz weit weniger Beachtung, obwohl die poltische Ereignisgeschichte gerade in den eher ungeschutzten Regionen ihre tiefen Spuren hinterliess. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes befassen sich daher in besonderer Weise mit den historischen und kulturellen Entwicklungen ausserhalb Konstantinopels und - sofern sich das nachvollziehen lasst - mit deren Ruckfluss in das politische Zentrum. Dabei beschrankt sich der Blick nicht nur auf das byzantinische Staatsgebiet. Vielmehr werden auch die Nachbarregionen und -volker, soweit sie unter dem kulturellen Einfluss von Byzanz stehen, mit einbezogen.
