Thousands of years in the future, humanity has colonized planets in other galaxies and taken its place among a broad spectrum of other advanced life forms. All is not well for 17-year-old human girl Zendra Starfire, however: she just got rejected from her first-choice college on another planet. Zendra is a genius, so how could she not have made the cut? It turns out that the rejection isnât quite what it seems, and with the evil Drang the Gray of the Triangulum Galaxy on a bloody rampage throughout the stars, Zendra may be more important to the future of humanityâ"and even the entire universeâ" than she ever thought possible.
ââ?¬Å"Zendra of the Peripheryââ?¬Â? is the first installment in the new hard-sci-fi series The Galaxies Like Dust, an ambitious project that takes clear inspiration from space opera and sci-fi classics. Author Seth T. Thatcher clearly loves these genres, and his enthusiasm is infectious.
The book makes use of several frame elements that help situate the reader. Every chapter opens with a quote, from sources as diverse as George Washington to Haruki Murakami, and this device provides a tantalizing little hint of whats to come. The book also uses passages from a mythical poetic tome, The Cosmic Compendium of Ancient Starfarers that help ground readers into the larger world of Thatchers The Galaxies Like Dust continuity. Great care has been taken with the tone and the world-building here. Theres also a lot to like if you happen to be conversant in the (real) history of physics, earning the book some hard sci-fi credibility.
Zendra is a compelling lead character who can do multiple things with aplomb. While shes introduced as a science genius, she also shows strong people skills (alien skills?) that will keep the reader guessing how she will resolve conflicts with the many antagonists she faces. While there are some big space battles, sometimes Zendra can talk her way out of a problem with the best of them. She also occasionally acts like an overwhelmed teenage girl, making her more believable.
Zendras story also alternates with several other viewpoint characters, and the anticipation to see these different story threads finally intertwine is high. In the last quarter of the book, when all the major players are aligned on the board, its very satisfying to see how theyve all come together. Also satisfying is seeing the dastardly (and sometimes downright scary) villains get their just deserts.
Thereââ?¬â?¢re also some fun little touches that will put smiles on readersââ?¬â?¢ faces. Zendra hails from the Via Lactea Galaxy (a clever play on ââ?¬Ë?Milky Wayââ?¬â?¢), and one of the planets the heroes encounter is called Nanu Nanu.
However, it is a very dense book, with a lot of exposition. While this style is not for everyone, sci-fi fans will enjoy jumping into such a fully realized world. Considering the vocabulary used, the reading level is high (and presumably targeted mostly toward people old enough to recognize the Mork and Mindy reference), but since Zendra is a teen protagonist, hopefully adventurous teenagers will take the plunge and begin a lifelong love affair with the genre. There still arent enough aspirational POC teen protagonists, and Zendra is a welcome addition to that field.
The plotting is strong throughout Seth T. Thatcherââ?¬â?¢s ââ?¬Å"Zendra of the Periphery,ââ?¬Â? and while the ending is satisfying, readers will likely find themselves wondering whatââ?¬â?¢s next for Zendra, Kazoo, and a whole crew of charming space pirates in the next installment. Hard sci-fi fans, as well as viewers of popular space operas like Star Trek should keep an eye on this series, because Zendraââ?¬â?¢s world is a very big place, and there is still so much to explore.
