Harrison does a great job of capturing the artificiality, pretentiousness and crassness of the moneyed class in New York City at a certain time. His characters are rendered well and I was very caught up until some really gruesome violent activities are described. I stopped reading at that point and couldn't get some of the horrors out of my mind. For those with a strong stomach, Harrison is worth the read.
