CATTERED over our literature may be found many interesting pictures of the lights and shadows of a stroller's life, and many are the illustrious names which have been linked with this Bohemian profession. Moliere, the father of French comedy, was a stroller for the greater part of his life, and numerous are the instances of players who have achieved fame and fortune on the French stage, after having toiled and struggled for years amongst ragged troupes of wandering Thespians. Mrs. Siddons was at one time a stroller; so was Kemble, and so was Edmund Kean. The strollers have been satirised by Churchill and others in verse, and depicted in all their tawdry picturesqueness by Hogarth. For a century or two they formed part and parcel of the social existence of the time, and though generally regarded by " the authorities" in the light of mere vagabonds and vagrants, their devotion to their profession, through all the trials and vicissitudes which beset them, and their mock-heroic mode of dealing with the ordinary affairs of life, have ever caused them to be held in kindly regard. On the stage they were emperors, kings, queens, heroes, and heroines; and, wretched and poor as they frequently were, they could not bring themselves, when they doffed the sock and buskin, to the level of ordinary mortals. Lowly though they were as to material wealth, they nursed high thoughts and noble sentiments, and took their views of life from a lofty mental altitude. The straits to which they were often reduced, and the multifarious duties which they were called upon to perform, have often attracted notice.
