This is a fascinating bootleg compilation made from the mono U.S. masters of the two classic American Beatles albums. They slot in together nicely as Yesterday...And Today contained three songs off of the then not-yet-released U.K. Revolver, and a handful of songs off of singles that hadn't yet shown up on LPs in England; and besides, this is the way that most casual American listeners born between 1950 and 1978 remember hearing the songs. The punchy U.S. mono remasterings might lack the subtleties of the British originals, but it gave the louder tracks on these two albums the bite they needed to carry the more daring songs past the band's younger fans, who were probably a little perplexed as to where the Beatles were taking them on songs like "Dr. Robert" and "Tomorrow Never Knows." Capitol Records really did have a brighter, closer sound than most of the competition and it probably allowed the Beatles to make the transition to psychedelia more easily than, say, the Byrds on Columbia. There are also mono mixes of "Rain," "Paperback Writer," "Dr. Robert" (U.K. mono), "I'm Only Sleeping" (U.K. mono), alternate takes and mixes of "Paperback Writer" and "Tomorrow Never Knows," and the cover re-creates the "butcher cover." The sound is excellent and it makes for more interesting listening in many respects than the authorized releases. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
