When we returned to the house, I spoke of this to my mother before them all, whereupon she reproved my father with some heat for not telling the truth. He was vexed, and said: "I was ashamed to say that you were unwflling to be their mistress and unwilling to see them. What have they done to offend you? " There was another thing which I thought odd and disagreeable: while my father was being inducted into his estate, and while the peasants were shouting their congratulations and good wishes--" Health and long life to you, our father Alexydi Stepan-itch!
