Although Yank Rachell is remembered mostly for his signature blues playing on the mandolin, he was also a fine guitar player (he knew his way around the fiddle and harmonica, as well) and a warm and expressive singer. He was the consummate blues sideman, but as this fine reissue shows, he was also more than capable of holding down the fort on his own. Originally released in 1973 as an LP from Blue Goose Records, this set features Rachell in a solo acoustic setting (Michael Stewart plays a supportive second guitar on several tracks), and the first thing one notices is that this is largely a guitar outing, with less mandolin than usual. That's hardly a problem, though, since Rachell's guitar playing is solid, and on songs like the touching "Wadie Green" and "Peach Tree Blues," he catches that perfect and almost meditative tone that marks the best acoustic blues. Not that the mandolin is ignored. The version here of Sleepy John Estes' classic "Diving Duck Blues" finds Rachell revisiting his original mandolin part, and he gives the song a special added poignancy with his finely nuanced vocal. Random Chance Records should be commended for bringing this wonderful set back into print on CD, and fans of Rachell and fine acoustic blues will find it well worth a listen. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi Read Less
