But why use many words in describing that which must be felt if it is to be known? Arise, thou desolate and outcast, arise and go to thy Father, and thou shalt know it! Awake, thou that sleepest, ask Christ to give thee light, and thou shalt know it! Let this Advent, let this Christmas, be to you, be to all of us, by God's grace, the beginning indeed of a new year, even of the acceptable year of the Lord! The voice crying in the wilderness says, Make straight the way of God! He is coming, coming quickly: prepare His way! Seek Him now by prayer; know Him now by faith; serve Him now with diligence and watchfulness: and thou shalt be found of Him in peace! O cast out, while yet there is time, the abominable thing which He hateth; the vile affection, the sinful lust, the hateful passion, against which His presence is a consuming fire; lest, when He comes, thou perish with it! Let the light of His spiritual coming so shine within thee as a fire to cleanse, to cheer, and to enlighten, that thou may est see, without terror the rising of that Advent day which shall disclose the hidden things of darkness, and burn up on every side the enemies of God!
