Edward Gordon Craig. Near Fine. An uncommon, excellent example of Edward Gordon Craig's woodcuts. Written by the artist himself, this work looks at Craig's woodcuts between 1898 and 1921. The first edition of this work. Edward Gordon Craig was an English modernist theatre practitioner. He was an actor, director and scenic designer. Craig notes to the preface that this work is not an attempt to teach anyone how to wood-engrave. This is because wood engraving is 'the kind of thing, I suppose, one can show in half an hour better than explain in half a year'. This work contains reproductions of woodcuts from 1898 to 1921 and has a few pages about Craig's own life, his friends and an explanation of his cuts. To the end he has some suggestions for young woodcutters. Limited edition, only 160 copies of this work was printed. Of which 150 were for sale. This is number 13 and is signed by Edward Gordon Craig. Loosely inserted is a very scarce woodcut by Craig mounted on paper. It is 10 by 5 and is dated 1906 by hand. Craig has noted to the bottom left corner that only 75 copies of this woodcut were printed. His signature sits just below the illustration. With a tipped in frontispiece of an unfinished block, and a further sixty mounted woodcuts. From the library of Patricia Milne Henderson to the front pastedown. Henderson was a noted art historian and collector. Her husband, Michael Jaffe was a director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge for seventeen years. A lovely example of this art form, from a noted creative. In the publisher's original buckram binding. Externally, very smart with patches of light rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Small loss to the cloth at the head of front board. Bookplate to the front pastedown, Patricia Milne Henderson. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Near Fine.
