The Chinese Book of Songs comprises some 305 songs ('poems'): a compilation originally ascribed to Confucius (b.551 BCE). It is in four main parts: folksongs (airs of the states), lesser courtly songs , greater courtly songs and songs of the temple and altar. In this translation I include only first, the folksongs of the people, in ballad form - the greater number composed and sung by women. They clearly expressive the power of the feminine, very dear to the early Taoists.
