Women: Images and Realities has emerged from a process of reflective teaching and research that builds upon our experiences in writing the previous editions. The first edition grew out of our experiences as teachers of introductory womens studies and psychology of women courses. We spent many years foraging among journals and anthologies to bring our students a view of feminism that reflected their diverse experience and spoke in a language that was accessible and compelling. While we wanted to include some of the fruits of feminist research, we felt it most important that students first encounter with womens studies be one that engaged them and evoked the flash of recognition and connection that has drawn women to feminism. To this end, Women: Images and Realities included a great many first person and fictional accounts. In order to address issues that emerge from discussions of the lives of women with diverse backgrounds, we not only include pieces about a variety of female experiences, but also, directly address some of the systems of domination that interact with gender in womens lives.
