For the last five months I have been so seriously ill with appendicitis that these pages have been kindly conducted by a lady friend of mine. At first I was able to superintend the work, but after the operation, which I underwent in October, it was impossible for me to do anything. It is not without emotion that I now begin to write this chat to you, as for many days my life was given up, and for weeks--nay, months--I thought I should never again write for the Press. The friend who has been, acting as " Experta" is a very well-known novelist, and though I see she has not spared your feelings, you ought to be glad to have had the chance of seeking her criticism. To her personally, of course, I am greatly indebted, and I am sure I may say "Thank you " to her in your name.
