As a nurse, I enjoyed reading this historical fiction set in WWII in North Africa and Italy. It follows the first group of nurses allowed to fly medical evac flights in a war zone. They were true pioneers but they faced much opposition and harrassment. The main character, Mellie has a hard time fitting in to most situations and the women don't make it easy on her. She begins anonymous correspondence with an army engineer, who also deals with the stigma of an infamous father. His father's legacy follows him everywhere because of his name. Their anonymous friendship helps them both, but in the meantime, their paths cross and she recognizes that he is the man she has been writing to, but doesn't tell him, as she feels he is not attracted to her in person. It's a sweet story about friendship, forgiveness and being yourself.
