When I first heard about this movie I wasn't sure if I'd want to see it! Cold time of year; extreme poverty, substance abuse and addiction; food challenges... desperate circumstances for a family struggling to keep going and needing to learn what has happened to their absent father... Jennifer Lawrence is amazing and moving as Ree, the teenaged eldest child who must care for her younger brother and sister... Their mother is present, but not really... She lives with severe depression and other issues so Ree must care for her too... John Hawkes as Ree's "Uncle Teardrop" gives an impressive and powerful performance as a man reluctant to become involved in their situation due to his own problems... The ending is satisfying yet bittersweet... Please watch this to become aware of how people in the rural parts of our nation are just getting by.

(Warning to those who like uncomplicated stories; this is not a cheery film, and the Ozark accent is sometimes tricky to understand.) Moving, but unsentimental mystery-drama about a rural Missouri community whose underground economy is meth labs. It also features Jennifer Lawrence's first star performance; she is very, very good as a young woman trying to save her family from eviction and build a decent life for herself. This was my third viewing of "Winter's Bone," and I still think it the most memorable film of 2010. (The director, Debra Granik, made "Leave No Trace": a little less dark, and also recommended.)
