This is a book you must read and buy an extra copy for a friend. One of the premiere personal accounts by a naval aviator from World War II through Vietnam, Engen is engaging and precise. His report of flying during World War II and making some of the most important late war strikes shows the heroism of a young man who jumped into combat in his teens when his dream of going to USNA was frustrated. Likewise, his details of experimental flying in the UK and US are important contributions to the history of tactical jet development, particualrly tailhook aviation. It is a valuable personal account of nearly a quarter century of naval service from the cockpit to the command of the penultimate conventionally powerered attack carrier. Engen chose not to address his later carrer as a flag officer retiring as a VADM. He benefited obviously from his position at Smithsonian but this is a readable and enjoyable account of the glory days of naval aviation from a man who participated in the important transitions from World War II on. The story of his deep draft command before USS America is memorable and details the frustration of a naval aviator commanding an old ammo ship and a flag officer who didn't like brown shoes. Must read.
