Through a deep cutting, which was the ancient moat of \vinchester Castle, with the Cemetery, where alike Wintonian and stranger after life's fitful fever sleep well and St. James's and Clifton terraces on the left, with the Barracks (now being rebuilt) on our right, we glide into the Winchester Station. Thanks to its two railways Winchester has a good train service, and is in easy connection with Newbury, Didcot, Basingstoke, Reading, Oxford, and the North, as well as with London, Farnham, Guildford, 8outhampton, Romsey, Salisbury, Fareham, Gosport, the Isle of Wight, Ports mouth, Brighton, Bournemouth, and other important centres. There are several other ways Of reaching Win chester which we must leave for the present. We have much to see and far to go. Sending our personal belong ings to our hotel (there is no lack of good hotels in Winchester), let us start on our rambles through the ancient City with as little encumbrance as possible, for we have much to see and far to go.
